Dr. Desmond Adler joined Gentuity in early 2021 as President of Cardiovascular with the personal goal of enabling interventional cardiologists to improve how they care for their patients. Desmond sees the convergence of advanced imaging technology, artificial intelligence, and user-centric design as critical to achieving this goal and sees the Gentuity platform as uniquely positioned to deliver these innovations to the clinic. Desmond has over 20 years of experience in the biomedical optics industry and has contributed to new product launches in cardiology, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, and pulmonology. During his time at LightLab Imaging and St. Jude Medical, Desmond led the development of previous generations of intravascular imaging systems. He also led the development and commercialization of drug-device combination therapies for rare ophthalmic diseases as General Manager and VP R&D of Corneal Health for Glaukos Corp.
Desmond feels that working in medical technology represents a unique way to contribute to society while also experiencing lifelong learning, enjoying professional growth, and forming personal bonds with exceptional individuals from all over the world. Desmond holds a BSc in electrical engineering from the University of Alberta and a PhD in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT.

Charles Allan is passionate about using really small things to solve big problems. Being surrounded by many successful and supportive entrepreneurs, he quickly gained the ability to create teams and transform problems into solutions.
An example of his passion at work can be found during his undergraduate years at Queens University, where he helped build a microfluidic pump for an implantable therapeutic for glaucoma. This project helped ignite his entrepreneurial spirit, and, while pursuing his Masters in Bioelectrical Engineering at McGill University, he formed a team that combined engineering and technology to develop microsolutions. Some of those initial microsystems are the foundational components used by the three companies that Charles founded: MY01, Inc., Stathera, Inc., and NXTSENS Microsystems, Inc. These companies each have won several awards and been selected for important growth accelerators. They have grown to over 70 employees, and combined to raise over $50M in funding.
Sanjeev Aggarwal, MD, MBA

Dr. Aggarwal has been internationally recognized for his work in advanced heart failure and structural heart disease. His clinical areas of interest include mechanical circulatory support, cardiac transplantation, ECMO, minimally invasive and transcatheter valve repair and replacement, and complex re-operative procedures. He has served on multiple institutional and national committees and scientific advisory boards. He has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters, and has been a principle or co-investigator in several FDA-approved clinical trials.
Prior to joining Abiomed, Dr. Aggarwal served as the Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery and the inaugural Clinical Innovation Officer for Beaumont Health in Michigan. He previously was the Director of Cardiac Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, MO. Dr. Aggarwal has also held faculty appointments in the Department of Surgery at Columbia University- New York Presbyterian Hospital and the University of Louisville Medical Center.
Dr. Aggarwal earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry and economics. He earned his medical degree from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. Dr. Aggarwal completed his residency in general surgery at NYU Medical Center, and then attended the University of Michigan for his cardiothoracic surgical training. While at the University of Michigan, Dr. Aggarwal was the recipient of a research training grant from the National Institute of Health (NIH). He also completed an advanced cardiac surgical fellowship in heart transplantation, ventricular assist devices, and minimally invasive surgery at Columbia University-New York Presbyterian hospital in New York. More recently, Dr. Aggarwal has earned an M.B.A. with certification in data science and business analytics from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Liz Asai is an expert in digital health startups, software as a medical device (SaMD), and early commercialization of new healthcare technology. She currently serves as Hologic’s Global Head of AI & Connectivity, spearheading their effort to develop AI solutions for breast and skeletal applications worldwide. Liz began her career co-founding 3Derm, a teledermatology and skin cancer AI company. She raised several rounds of capital, attracted over a million dollars in public and private research grants, and successfully advocated for reimbursement of 3Derm’s telemedicine service from several major payers. In 2020, 3Derm obtained FDA Breakthrough Designations for two autonomous AI skin cancer detection algorithms and was acquired by Digital Diagnostics. Jon Bloom, MD

Dr. Jon Bloom is a board-certified physician and entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in technology development, patient monitoring, biomedical research, and health care delivery. He co-founded Podimetrics in 2011 while a student at the MIT Sloan School of Management, and he’s served as our CEO ever since. Dr. Bloom was first inspired to create a solution to help prevent diabetic amputations while practicing anesthesia; he frequently treated patients who required foot amputations and knew there had to be a less drastic way to prevent diabetic foot complications. He previously served as a Clinical Assistant Professor and staff anesthesiologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and as the Director of Global Medical Affairs for Covidien’s Respiratory and Monitoring Solutions division. His fellowship in Interventional Cardiology under Richard Stack at Duke University led to a career-long interest in the development and validation of cardiac devices. After training, Dr. Buller returned to the University of British Columbia and its teaching hospitals, eventually leading the Division as the U.B.C. Sauder Chair in Cardiology. In 2009 Dr. Buller joined the renowned cardiac program at St. Michael’s Hospital as Director of Cardiac Catheterization and Intervention and Professor of Medicine, University of Toronto. After a decade leading both advanced coronary and structural heart intervention teams, he accepted a position at Teleflex as Medical Director, Interventional. Now focused on device development, he nevertheless has continued his practice in complex coronary intervention – a connection he believes central to solving for true clinical needs.

Margi Coggins is a certified nurse-midwife with over twenty-five years of experience in women’s health. She “caught” more than a thousand babies in both hospital and community settings. She was an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and helped the Cambridge Birth Center apply for Baby Friendly designation. She directed one of the largest midwifery practices in Massachusetts at Mount Auburn Hospital for almost a decade. She helped start families with alternative insemination and continued to see those moms for their annual exams for years afterwards. She taught medical, nursing and midwifery students in the clinic and at the bedside.
Margi left clinical practice in 2022 to “midwife the system” of obstetrics throughout the Commonwealth. She has been a member of the Massachusetts Mortality & Morbidity Review Committee since 2015 and serves as President to the Massachusetts Affiliate of the American College of Nurse-Midwives. She also provides consultative services to medical product designers. She received her MSN from the University of Missouri, her BSN from Rockhurst University/Research College of Nursing, and her BA in Biology from Mount Holyoke College. She also earned an MS in Entomology from Michigan State University. When she isn’t doing “work-work,” she does “farm-work” at her family’s small off-grid farm in Western Massachusetts where she keeps bees and chickens, makes wine and maple syrup, and picks about 2 tons of rocks each year.

Andrew Greenfield, Abiomed’s worldwide president, has served in a leadership capacity at Abiomed since joining the company in 2005, including serving as a Section 16 Officer and named executive officer of Abiomed. Prior to that, he was vice president and general manager of global healthcare solutions.
Before joining Abiomed, Andrew held positions in sales, marketing and finance at GE Healthcare and The Boeing Company. A high-energy, connection-driven, non-profit executive, with a background in life sciences, technology and robotics engineering, Rachel joined MassMEDIC as Vice President in February 2020. During her tenure, the organization has tripled its headcount and increased its operating budget by more than 40%. Rachel joined the organization just weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down all in-person events, and pivoted its in-person events strategy, launching a virtual events campaign to serve members and keep the medtech community connected.
Promoted to Chief Operating Officer of MassMEDIC in 2021, Rachel is responsible for executing the organization’s strategy, including cultivating community partnerships and employee development. She guides the direction and execution of the organizations programming and community collaborations, including Think Tanks on patient engagement, Working Groups around digital health, and she leads the MassMEDIC’s IGNITE Accelerator Program.

Prior to that, she held the position of Vice President, Global Medical Affairs with Covidien’s Peripheral Vascular Division. She has extensive experience in product development and new product launches, most notably through her time at Covidien and Eli Lilly & Company.

Martha Shadan

Martha Shadan was the president and chief executive officer at Miach Orthopaedics from 2019 to 2022. During her tenure, she led the company through the FDA approval process and received the first DeNovo in Sports Medicine. During 2018, Shadan served as global vice president of marketing at Smith & Nephew plc, a role she assumed after the company acquired Rotation Medical, where she was president and CEO. Shadan led Rotation Medical through FDA approval and commercialization of the Rotation Medical Bioinductive Implant for rotator cuff tears (now known as REGENETEN), as well as the company’s acquisition by Smith & Nephew in December 2017.
Shadan has more than three decades of experience in the life science industry as a business leader in a variety of both large and start-up organizations. Prior to joining Rotation Medical, she was the president of the Trauma Division at Zimmer where she managed the P&L for the global business. Shadan served at Covidien as vice president/general manager of Vascular Therapies and vice president/general manager BioSurgery and Sports Surgery. Other companies that have benefited from Shadan’s experience and leadership include Bristol Myers Squibb Co. and Merck Millipore.
Shadan is actively involved with the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed). She has been on the Board of Directors since 2017 and is a current member and past chair of the Accel Board of Directors. Shadan is the past chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee for AdvaMed and is a founding member of the Leadership Circle for the Women’s Executive Network (WEN). Shadan serves on the board of CVRx, LeMaitre and is the chair of the board of Brilliant Strings Therapeutics. She is also a board advisor for several other companies.

Scott A. Sigman, MD

Dr. Sigman is a national and internationally recognized leader in Opioid Sparing Surgery. He is an Orthopedic Surgeon that specializes in the knee and shoulder. He has been in clinical practice for over 25 years and is a leader in professional education, medical device development, and has numerous peer reviewed publications. He is the team physician at UMASS Lowell. He is a member of Governor Bakers Commission to establish a pain management access program in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
He did his sports medicine fellowship at the prestigious Kerlan Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles. His Opioid Sparing leadership propelled him to become a Fellow of the Worlds Society on Sports and Exercise Medicine, and most recently has had the honor of becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
In addition, to his clinical responsibilities Dr. Sigman is the Chief Medical Officer for OrthoLazer Orthopedic Laser Centers. The OrthoLazer franchise was developed to provide an alternative treatment option for acute and chronic pain to help combat the Opioid crisis. Dr. Sigman is an accomplished national speaker and has a TED talk about his Journey of Opioid Sparing Surgery. Dr. Sigman is also the host of the popular The Ortho Show podcast. He is a TEDx talk speaker.
Upma Sharma, PhD

Upma Sharma has dedicated her career to transforming medicine with materials. Under her leadership, Arsenal Medical has established its platform of purpose-built biomaterials, achieved FDA breakthrough device status and IDE approval for ResQFoam™, and secured over $65M of non-dilutive funding from a diverse group of partners, including the Department of Defense, DARPA, NIH (both National Cancer Institute and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute), and Massachusetts Life Sciences Center.
Upma joined the company as a research scientist, and her role quickly expanded. She led Arsenal’s ResQFoam foundational program from concept to the clinic, guiding product development, GMP contract manufacturing, the regulatory process through IDE approval, and clinical trial design. Today, Upma leads the expansion of Arsenal’s biomaterial platform for strategic growth across high-value clinical indications.
Prior to joining Arsenal, Upma was a key member of the Lyra Therapeutics team that created a novel bioresorbable scaffold. She oversaw the development of this technology for the treatment of chronic sinusitis, including leading a Phase I clinical study. The data from that study led to subsequent venture funding and the eventual IPO of Lyra Therapeutics.
Upma earned a Ph.D. from Princeton University in Chemical Engineering and a B.S.E. from Purdue University. During a post-doctoral fellowship in Bioengineering at Rice University, she was awarded a NIH Training Grant in Nanobiology. Upma has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific publications and is an inventor on more than 40 issued or pending patents worldwide, including 20 US issued patents.
Joe Shonkwiler, MD

Dr. Joe Shonkwiler joined the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) as the agency’s inaugural Chief Operating Officer in 2023. ARPA-H is a newly formed federal agency with over $2.5 billion in funding to make pivotal investments in break-through technologies and broadly applicable platforms, capabilities, and resources that have the potential to transform important areas of medicine and health. ARPA-H focuses on “moonshot” investments in solutions that cannot readily be accomplished through traditional research or commercial activity. As COO, he leads all the business and administrative operations for the agency, including technology transfer, finance, IT and data infrastructure, contracting and acquisitions, and human resources.
Dr. Shonkwiler joined ARPA-H from the healthcare and life sciences startup business development team at Amazon Web Services (AWS). In that role, he and his team were responsible for putting Amazon’s people, technology, best practices, and relationships to work alongside investors and their portfolio companies to accelerate scientific, engineering, and commercial efforts in biotech, health tech, and med tech. He not only worked directly with hundreds of healthcare and life science startups from conception to exit, but also founded and hosted the AWS Health Innovation Podcast, a weekly podcast featuring entrepreneurs and investors driving progress in healthcare and life science from across the globe.
Prior to joining Amazon, Dr. Shonkwiler was the Vice President of Adoption and Training at Aledade, a venture-backed startup helping independent primary care practices succeed in value-based care. In that role, he led national implementation of Aledade’s software and services as well as all internal and external training on principles of population health management and value-based care. Before Aledade, he was the CEO of CollectedMed, a cloud-based health education software startup spun out of Columbia University’s Department of Surgery.
Dr. Shonkwiler also spent time on Capitol Hill as the Healthcare Legislative Assistant for former United States Senator Rob Portman, serving as the Senator’s senior health policy advisor for all matters related to federal health policy. He began his career as a general surgery resident at Columbia University Medical Center/New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Before joining Sirtex in 2018, Kevin served as VP and Associate General Counsel at Flexion Therapeutics, managing intellectual property and corporate governance. Prior to that, he was General Counsel for the Danaher Life Sciences Platform, leading the legal, compliance, and intellectual property functions for the operating companies within the platform. Kevin has also held senior legal leadership positions within Novartis Pharmaceuticals in Switzerland and Massachusetts, including as General Counsel for the Novartis Molecular Diagnostics Unit, focused on developing tools to further personalized medicine solutions. Before moving in-house, Kevin worked for multinational law firms in New York, Silicon Valley, and London.

Todd joined Minerva Surgical, a publicly traded women’s health organization, as President & CEO on January 3, 2023. He has led a complete restructuring of the organization. Prior, he spent four years as the Chief Executive Officer of Activ Surgical, a digital surgery company focused on advanced surgical imaging and AI, where he oversaw the FDA/CE clearance of its ActivSight technology, as well as leading four fundraising rounds totaling over $92 million. From 2015 to 2019, Mr. Usen was President, Medical Systems Group, for Olympus Corporation of the Americas, where he took charge of a complex $2B+ business and restructured the company for leaner growth and investment, drove successful mergers and acquisitions activity, led the expansion from 6 medical divisions to 11 in 3.5 years. Prior to that, Mr. Usen served in executive positions including President, United States Orthopedics, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Joint Reconstruction, and Senior Vice President Sports Medicine at Smith and Nephew, and Vice President Sales and Director of Sales at Boston Scientific Corporation. Mr. Usen holds a BS in Marketing from the Isenberg School at the University of Massachusetts and did his MBA work at Pepperdine University.
